Lee-Whedon Memorial Library & Community Resources

General Materials: The following are the materials available from Lee-Whedon Memorial Library:

  • Books - 47,000 (Fiction [Adults, Children and Young Adult], Non-Fiction [Adults, Children and Young Adult]
  • 8 Newspapers including The Medina Journal, Daily News, Buffalo News, Democrat & Chronicle, NY Times, Business First, Union Sun & Journal and USA Today
  • 120 Magazine titles, including popular titles such as Newsweek, Time, People, Entertainment Weekly, Business Week and others
  • Video cassettes
  • Large selection of DVD's
  • City directories & cemetery records
  • Compact discs
  • Books-on-CD
  • Books-on-Tape
  • Playaways, which are self-contained audio books
  • MP3 audio books
  • Medina Yearbooks dating back to the year 1916
  • Art prints, which can be borrowed for a month
  • Microfilm - Medina Journal Register & Medina Tribune, 1861 - present
  • Databases including Mango, Digital Sanborn Maps, and all the ones available through NIOGA
  • Since Lee-Whedon Memorial Library is part of the Nioga Library System (Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee Counties), books are available through the interlibrary loan from those libraries free of charge.  Also, some materials, especially academic works, may be available for interlibrary loan from libraries outside of the system and from university libraries, although a small fee may apply.
  • Other Services: The library offers the use of a copy machine, a fax and notary service, state of the art disc cleaning for CD's, CD-ROM's or DVD's, and an opportunity to display your business or hobby in our display case located at the front of the building.

    Download free e-books: The library offers Overdrive, which is free software needed to download books to your e-reader from home, with a valid library card. The software allows Download FREE e-booksyou to check out a book to your device for a 2-week loan period. You may check out only 2 books at a time. When your 2-week loan period has expired, Overdrive will automatically check-in your books. There is no more concern about late charges.     Download Public Domain Books: These are free books to download to ANY e-reader. They Download FREE Public Domain Bookshave an expired copyright so they will remain on your e-reader permanently. Computers: There are 6 public computers available for sign out and use in the library.  There is also a children's computer in the children's section.  Several 'IPAC computers are available to search for books.  There is a wide range of programs and applications on the computers including broadband Internet, Microsoft Office applications, tutorials, Microsoft MapPoint, and many children's games. The children's computer allows children to play games without accessing the Internet.  The public computers do not have any Internet blocking software. Projects cannot be saved to the hard-drive of the public computers. You must bring a floppy disk or a flash drive to save your work. Floppies can be purchased at the library for $1.00 and flash drives can be purchased for $5.00. You will have a time limit of 1 hour on the computer. If no one is waiting or a reservation for the computer has not been made, then you may extend your time by another hour. If you still need more time and there are not patrons waiting, you can ask desk staff to extend your time yet again.

Wi-Fi: Lee-Whedon started offering wireless service in June 2007. You will never have to wait for another computer again and there are absolutely no time limits. Also, it is NOT necessary to have a library card to gain Internet access. All you need is a laptop that contains an internal or an external wirless card. (View Lee-Whedon's wireless policy)

Being a library cardholder brings great rewards. One of those rewards is the ability to access all the useful databases available through Lee-Whedon and NIOGA, free of charge. NIOGA offers EBSCOhost and Gale which give you a multitude of databases including Auto Repair, Novelist, EBSCOAnimals, Kids Search, Custom Newspapers, National and Inernational Newspapers, periodicals and many more. Lee-Whedon also offers Digital Sanborn Maps, which is used for genealogy and Bookletters (must have a Lee-Whedon card to access this databases). Our newest resource is Mango. You can learn a new language every month and track your progress at the same time. Information at your fingertips...all you need is a library card.
